What Are You Thankful For? | An Interview with NYC

A Note From the Team

Recently, the MaggyLondon.com team has been sharing thoughts and stories in the spirit of the season — everything from what we're grateful for to favorite holiday memories. Of course, our conversations share similarities — we're thankful for our families, our friends, our careers — but there's one more thing we have in common: you. Every day, we get to do what we love...because of you. Happy Thanksgiving, from our family to yours.

We totally get that the two or three days leading up to a holiday can be, in a word, stressful. That's why we put together the perfect 5-minute break from all of the pre-Thanksgiving hustle. Sit back, relax, and take a quick breather as we show you 1) a fun video where we ask our fellow New Yorkers about their funniest holidays memories, and 2) a more personal peek into how your favorite ladies are spending the holiday season this year.

Thanksgiving with Alejandra

What is your funniest Thanksgiving memory?

My mother decided to try a vegetarian Thanksgiving menu one year where she replaced the turkey with a bechamel-topped lentil loaf. My brother burst into tears when he realized that it wasn’t a joke and that there REALLY wasn’t going to be any turkey. It’s been 20+ years, and my brother is still totally traumatized by this.

If you could have anyone at your Thanksgiving table, who would it be?

Lin-Manuel Miranda!

What are your plans this year?

We’ll be having dinner with my family at my parents’ house in NJ. It’s only about 25 or so minutes away from my NYC apartment, but feels like a world away so I always enjoy the time spent there.  We eat dinner pretty late, so will probably drive over from the city in the early evening along with my brother, his girlfriend, and our dog, Hudson Riverton, and spend a night or two. We've never been into the whole Black Friday thing, so the next day will be a low-key day filled with leftovers, naps, books, and 10,000 cheesy Hallmark movies.

What are you grateful for?

This year I’m grateful for the basics, like my beautiful little home, power, clean water, the Internet, well-stocked grocery stores—all those things I too often take for granted, but which so many people in parts of our country—including many of my own family members in Puerto Rico—have had to do without the past couple months. I’m also grateful for health, my husband, my dog, my incredible friends and family,  all the amazing career opportunities I’ve had this past year, the flexibility to work for myself on my own terms, for travel and new experiences, for moments of connection, and for a mind filled with plans and dreams for the days ahead!

What is your funniest Thanksgiving memory?

So I get together with my cousins, and I have that one cousin who kinda does anything you tell him to. We asked to see how many marshmallows he could stuff into his mouth…you can imagine how crazy that looked!

If you could have anyone at your Thanksgiving table, who would it be?

All of my sisters! We all live in different parts of the country and we’re never all together for Thanksgiving, so that would be my dream. There’s three of us total and it would be so nice.

What are your plans this year?

This year for Thanksgiving, we’re actually doing something super fun. My family and I are flying to Florida to visit my parents. I’m excited because we’re going to a theme park over there. We’ve done this before — there are no lines, so we basically have the park to ourselves. I’m really excited!

What are you grateful for?

This is probably so cliche, but I’m grateful for my two little ones! They’re just so cute, they make me smile, they’re so funny — on bad days they just give you a hug and everything’s better. I’m grateful for them.

What is your funniest Thanksgiving memory?

Last year after a big meal, we lifted our 1-year-old niece out of her high chair and all of her bottom buttons on her shirt popped open...leaving her little belly hanging out! I guess she was as stuffed as all of us were.

If you could have anyone at your Thanksgiving table, who would it be?

My late grandmother, for even just one more year. She had the best one-liners and was always dressed to impress.

What are your plans this year?

The night before Thanksgiving, my boyfriend Adam and I stay in and binge-watch all of the Friends Thanksgiving episodes. Then on Thanksgiving morning, we drive home to Pennsylvania to be with family.

What are you grateful for?

Honestly, so many things. But mainly Adam and my family, my life in New York, and my health.

What are your plans this year?

I am bringing my husband and 3-year-old daughter to visit my 88-year-old grandmother. She lives far away and has not yet met my daughter, so it's an extra special Thanksgiving for our family

What are you grateful for?

My husband, who put up with a challenging 2017. My business (Babies on the Brain) took off this year, but it would never have happened without his support!

What are you grateful for?

Cheesy but true, this Thanksgiving I am most grateful for my family (as always). My brother comes into town every Thanksgiving. We make the turkey, the sides, dessert, and then we sit around the table — all of our family — and just enjoy the meal.
